“i just called to say i love you”

stevie wonder’s “i just called to say i loved you” .. it has been over 27 years since its release and the song is still as fresh and scintillating as if it was released yesterday! this is probably one of those songs that the musician did not take much time writing and composing, cuz the orchestration of the song is gentle and the melodies are simple but the song makes the most strong impression .. often it is the simple things that make the most impact .. is that not so?? 🙂

the only challenging part of the song is that the scale of the chorus “i just called to say I love you” changes at the end. infact the scale changes twice. Once from F# to G and then from G to Ab. in the instrumental i have changed the scale only once .. F# to G .. because i am not really a fan of scale changing. but it sounds alright in this song. the chorus is also accompanied by a bell with arpeggio chords. the cymbal also joins in at the chorus. a hot-air flute for stevie’s voice completes the equation. as i said .. the layout out of the song is quite simple so it did not take much time to make it .. just the one thing took a little time .. picking out the right base drum and snare .. since only the particular ones that are used in the original track suit the song and it’s tempo. for bass .. i have picked a jazzy-flavored one this time becuase i wanted a bass whose pluck lingered for a few seconds enhancing the free flow nature of the rhythm. it sounds great!

probably a good song to play when you want to call your sweetheart even when you have nothing to say! enjoy!
