“piya tu”

Up this time is another milestone song by the maestro R. D. Burman .. “piya tu”. This song, I believe, marks the beginning of a significant era in the Hindi Music industry. There have been cabaret songs before this one too .. but this song is a proof of the maturity of this genre of music. This song also established .. once and for all .. that Asha Bhosale and Helen are indeed the unbeaten Queens of Cabaret! Another fact of interest is that the male voice that sings “monica .. oh my darling” in the chorus line of the song is RD himself.

Many years after this song was released, Leslie Lewis (one of the “Colonial Cousin” duo with Hariharan) released a remix track of this song. My track is an instrumental of the remix track. The track begins with a signature bass loop that stays more or less constant throughout the song but it blends so well with the rhythm that I can’t imagine the song without it! The most difficult part was understandably the one where RD sings “monica .. oh my darling” – it was very very important for the song that this part be pulled off well .. and I think I have been able to do justice to it. I hope it qualifies to the standards RD has set! The challenge with every RD song is to be able to recreate .. even if not perfectly the same .. the beats that he has used. There are always so many variations and instruments at any given time that it often becomes tricky. But it is all worth the effort cuz when it is all done .. one has the great feeling of having tried to recreate the magic of the maestro!

I always wonder .. what RD’s music would be like today if he were alive. A guy who could do so much WITHOUT the aid of sophisticated instruments and softwares and technologies .. once can only wonder what he’d do with all these things given!
So without any further ado .. here’s the instrumental of probably the best composed .. recorded .. sung .. and appreciated songs of the century ..
